Activity Descriptions, Before & After: Weight in 150 Characters

Prompt: Common App activity list: each activity description is capped at 150 characters including spaces. It is the most commonly wasted prime real estate in the application.

What this demonstrates: 150 characters can't hold a story — only evidence. The formula: start with a verb + quantify the result + name the specific object, and cut every restatement of your title (the admissions officer already saw it in the position field). Five pairs below: ❌ is the common version, ✅ is the same activity written to score.

❌ As president of the science club, I was responsible for organizing activities and leading members in various interesting experiments. ✅ Grew club from 12 to 41 members; designed 8 lab sessions/semester; coached 3 juniors to city science-fair medals.

Commentary: The ❌ version is all duty-description ("responsible for…") with zero information. The ✅ version has three verbs and three sets of numbers — growing 12 to 41 is itself the evidence of leadership, no need to say "leadership."

❌ I volunteered at a community center where I helped children with their homework and learned the importance of giving back. ✅ Tutored 9 migrant-family kids in math 3 hrs/week for 2 yrs; built 30-lesson fraction workbook now used by 2 volunteer groups.

Commentary: The second half of the ❌ version ("learned the importance of…") is the most common waste of characters — reflections belong in essays; the activity field holds facts. In the ✅ version, a workbook adopted by two other volunteer groups proves impact beyond personal participation.

❌ Member of school orchestra. Participated in many performances and rehearsals and improved my violin skills greatly. ✅ 2nd violin, 4 yrs; principal for 2026 season; led sectionals for 6 players; performed 11 concerts incl. city New Year gala.

Commentary: The ❌ version leans on empty words like "many" and "greatly." The ✅ version uses a timeline (4 years → principal) to show trajectory, and "led sectionals" shows teaching responsibility — the same experience at a completely different information density.

❌ Founded a WeChat public account about physics and posted articles regularly which received many views and positive feedback. ✅ Write weekly physics explainers (58 posts); 4,200 followers; top post on rainbow optics hit 32K reads; answer ~20 reader Qs/wk.

Commentary: "Regularly" and "many views" in the ❌ version are hiding. The ✅ version dares to report exact numbers — even unimpressive numbers read as credible, because specific = believable. Answering ~20 reader questions a week says more about real commitment than any view count.

❌ Worked hard to take care of my younger brother after school every day because my parents were busy working. ✅ Primary after-school caregiver for brother (age 7), 15 hrs/wk: meals, homework, pinyin practice—while maintaining 3.9 GPA.

Commentary: Family responsibility is one of the most underrated "activities" — it absolutely belongs on the list, and US admissions officers weigh it heavily. The ✅ version writes it like a real job: duties, hours, and the GPA maintained alongside. Never hide it because it isn't an award.

What you can take away

  • The formula: verb first + numbers + specific object; delete "responsible for," "various," "many," "greatly"
  • Reflections ("learned the importance of…") never go in the activity field — that's the essay's job
  • Report numbers even when they're modest: specific = credible, vague = padding
  • Family responsibility, part-time jobs and caring for siblings are legitimate activities — US admissions officers value them
